We have been building aquariums for ten years. Initially we used a syphon box and trickle filter.Totally unreliable and ineffective. Our customers want a low maintenance system with limited maintenance costs. If you have several hours per week available to carry out water changes and buy salt and water then this system is not for you.

Marine fish prefer mature water. water changes can not provide the identical temp/salinity and therefore creates an imbalance in the system killing off valuable bacteria. The water disposed off down the drain contains salt and waste from the tank. putting extra pressure on the water purification system.

We also support the Shark Society of which we are the founder members. Sharks are essential to a health reef, eating dead or dying fish. Our breeding program is intended to study the behavior of these important species.

What are the benifits of a sump?

The aquarium is a piece of furniture and should blend into the room. Therefore we dont want Skimmers and other equipment hanging from it. The equipment in the aquarium should be the minimum required and therefore a sump is firstly a means of providing space in the cabinet to house all the equipment ,leaving the aquarium free for viewing.

The biological cycle is the same whether tropical.cold water or marine. The difference is in the way in which polution is dealt with. Salt water has a greater densitiy than tropical water. The fish are totaly different in the way they absorb and discharge salt from thier bodies and therefore the filter system in order to be sucessfull has to be able to deal with the waste produced by the tank.

What is the waste. Uneaten food. dying corals/fish/ etc. these are produced as ammonia. highly toxic to fish. If the filter system is unable to cope with this waste then fish will die. The filter will only produce bacteria to a level to deal with the waste present in the aquarium. Added fish,corals etc will initialy cause an additional polution untill the filter expands to absorb the waste.

Bacteria break down the ammonia to Nitrite and thence to Nitrate which is less harmfull. Nitrate can only be removed by water changes with water containing no Nitrate. Pointless using tap water as the nitrate content is higher than that in the aquarium.

What a sump does.

The water flows from the aquarium into the first chamber. The level of the water remains constant in this chamber and therefore idealy suited for the skimmer. The skimmer operates on the principle that waste attaches its self to the bubbles and rises to the surface and is pushed up into the cup. The bubbles must give an appearance of milk to be effective. Skimmers only work effectivily in salt water which produces the fine bubbles required.

The second chamber contains live sand. This is matured and bacteria grow in the sand. Calurpa is added to the sand as a plant. The roots then absorb Nitrate as food. eliminatiog the need for water changes. The calurpa is lit 24/7 by a 30W tube forcing it to grow. The Heater is also fitted in this chamber.

The Final chamber contains the Bio Balls. These have a massive surface area and bacteria grow inabundance on it.This breaks down the ammonia to nitrite.

The pump returns the water to the aquarium.

The sump is designed to take the excess water from the aquarium in the event of a power cut or maintance. The advantages are obvious. the aquarium is free of equipment. Filters are easy to work on. Increased oxyegen levels and no water changes.

Does a sump smell
No. there is no smell. (The calurpa sea weed)produces oxygen which circulates in the water ibreasing biological activity.
How deep should the sand be.
no more than two inches. deep sand filters are void of oxygen and therefore produce toxic gasses
Do I have to feed the filter
We recommend Bacterlife by Water life and PH 8-3 as essential additives in the marine aquarium
Does The Sump need cleaning.
No definitly not. The essential cleaning of the sump is carried out naturaly with the introduction of Bacteria.Bactilife/cycle or any simiilar product.
What maintance do I need to do.
The skimmer will require regular cleaning of the cup to ensure that the scum reaches the cup.and ensuring that the bubbles are like milk. Large bubbles dont work.
Is there any noise.
The skimmer will produce small levels of noise as the bubbles rise in the chamber.

HOLE IN THE WALL

There are various ways to achieve a picture wall aquarium. Picture frame on one side as shown below. Cabinet on the other.

Its not practical to build an aquarium the thickness of the wall. the deeper the aquarium the greater the pressure of the water on the sides and base. as follows

600mm high = 10mm glass

750mm high = 12mm glass

900mm high = 15mm glass

1000m high = 19mm glass

1200mm high = 25mm glass

any thing deeper that 1200mm has to be in acrylic.

The thicker the glass the greater the cost. generally 15mm and above is built on site.

The volume of water in a marine system is an essential factor. the larger the volume the easier to keep. Any variation in polution levels is slower and therefore easier to control. Small tanks its instant.

Our basic systems are manufactured in pine. this is resistant to salt. MDF,Chipboard etc absorb the moisture. We also build in Hardwood.Oak etc
