We have been building aquariums for ten years. Initially we used a syphon box and trickle filter.Totally unreliable and ineffective. Our customers want a low maintenance system with limited maintenance costs. If you have several hours per week available to carry out water changes and buy salt and water then this system is not for you.

Marine fish prefer mature water. water changes can not provide the identical temp/salinity and therefore creates an imbalance in the system killing off valuable bacteria. The water disposed off down the drain contains salt and waste from the tank. putting extra pressure on the water purification system.

To keep marines buy a system designed to do the job.

Our cabinets are constructed on 3x2 pine, with 18mm ply top and bottom.12mm back panel. choice of  front and side panels.

Not flat packed. delivered assembled and ready to use.

We endeavour to carry out site inspections on every project to establish any difficulties in access and location of the system.

We are able to provide equipment for our systems at considerably less than the RRP by putting together a package to suit the system we are installing.

Live sand/live rock are an essential factor in the maturing process. by using RO water.Quality salt mix the maturing process is substantially reduced to approx for weeks from 12 weeks by reducing the initial pollution levels of the aquarium.

Uncured rock takes up to eight weeks to cure and prolongs the maturing process.

The calurpa has to be a specific species as certain sea weeds are sensitive to PH and salt levels. Use only our Calurpa tested over ten years of production.

The roots must grow in the substrate to be effective in the reduction of Nitrates.

Why are water changes not required.

The system produces natural evaporation of water. this is created by the movement of water in the aquarium.exchange of gasses at the surface, flow of water down to the sump. this evaporation is what takes place in the sea.

salt does not evaporate only pure water and therefore its pure water that needs to be replaced. Using an RO unit and float switch the salt levels in the system remain stable and constant.

In the summer temperatures rise due to fluctuations in the surrounding environment. If the temperature in the room rises so also will the aquarium.it is effected by the surrounding temperature.

Corals and fish can not survive in temperature of 28c and above. A chiller is necessary and evaporation increases.

The succes of keeping marine fish is to maintain a constant environment of salt/ph ammonia and temperature.

The biological cycle is ammonia/nitrite and Nitrate if nitrates levels are high its the end product of high ammonia. cut down on feeding and increase bacteria.

Wide range of styles.colours and sizes. The essential factor in cabinet construction is the ability to take the weight of the aquarium and to spread the load evenly across the floor. The frame is constructed of 3x2 pine with 18mm top and base and 12mm back.

the front and sides to customers specification. Most aquariums in aquatic shops and garden centres are specifically designed for tropical fish. adapted for marine with hang on skimmers. external filters which are totally unsuitable.

if you want Marine fish. The initial investment is essential in keeping marine fish in an appropriate environment. will ultimately save money iin replacing fish that die because they are not properly cared for.

Beware of false claims by inexperienced and unqualified operators. We are licenced by DEFRA

 Beginners guide part 2

Over the past few weeks Ive had many conversations with hobbist attempting to set up a successful marine aquarium with a multitude of conflicting advise both from the trade and other hobbist.

looking at it from the prospective of a fish. When man went to the moon he had to wear a specialist suit. that's because the atmosphere on the moon is alien to humans. In the ocean the fish is in its element and quite happy despite the fact that he might be eaten at any moment.Based on this philosophy therefore why would we want to create an aquarium which is alien to the conditions in the sea.

There aren't any external filters in the ocean. there aren't any filter sponges. The excuse is that its a sealed environment. so is a rocket on the way to the moon.

In the oceans there is live rock.  sea weed, there is large amounts of oxygen necessary even to keep fish alive. The sea has its own clean up crew which range from the crabs, shrimps star fish up to the great white shark.

Experts believe in very fixed and definite rules applying to marine fish. I fail to see the objective in a bubble trap in a sump. Does it matter that you see oxygen bubbles in the tank. They are created by the waves in the sea and smashing against the rock.

In setting up a marine tank bearing in mind that if you over feed them they will die, that's because the excess food pollutes the water, and therefore crabs/shrimps,brittle star fish and the nasty bristle worm take care of cleaning up.They are essential in keeping pollution under control. sand star fish keep the sand turned over, as do sand gobies like the blue cheek.white goby and the diamond gobie.Algae blennies not a pretty fish but one of the essential fish in any aquarium will eat the excess algae.

Been plagued by the horrid anemone that spread over your tank. By accident I discovered a fish that loves to eat them. The banner fish. there are specialist fish that serve a purpose in the sea and in the aquarium. The problem is that unless you know where the fish comes from its very difficult to create the correct environment, each ocean is different and the red sea is unique with high salt levels.

We buy our fish from the same area and the same supplier. therefore we know the correct temperature. salinity and ph and all the fish are natural to each other. The essential factor in keeping marines is to know the exact volume of water in the aquarium. that way you cant over dose or under dose medication or additives. remembering that rocks sand and even the fish displace water

Once set up its best to leave the tank alone. I know that's hard for some people to do. who feel the need to fiddle with the rocks.or moving corals. but remember firstly fish probably don't know what the great big thing with fingers moving about is actually  human. it could be some thing about to eat them.

Its a natural instinct and part of the survival technic in the ocean to be aware of some thing that fancies you for lunch. Stress is one of the factors of white spot. its in the water and ready to pounce on any fish that's weakened and ready to be eaten. that's what the parasites do. eat your fish, thousands of them. The cycle of a parasites is to attach its self to the fish.looks like a spot and then when ready drop off into the sand and multiply.Parasites are also animals and a higher salt level deters any out break at 1.024 and higher.

A UV steriliser does help but it only kills parasites and algae that pass through it and not floating in the tank. Any treatment should be given with extreme caution. the underlying reasons for the out break must firstly be taken into account. PH is an essential factor and  should be 8-3 if it isn't buy waterlife 8-3 to adjust. one teaspoon is equally to 40 gallons.

Cleaner shrimps and cleaner fish an essential part of the aquarium and fish are certainly more happier with thier presence.

The Banner fish. prefer to swim in shoals and three are probably more happier that two. will keep the aquarium clear of the nastiest in the aquarium.
Diamond goby. happier in pairs. sift sand for food. must be supplemented by pellets etc as insufficient food in the substrate

So what do I do next? Marine fish keeping is never going to be cheap. The difference between tropical and marine fish in terms of cost. comes down to the need for RO water.Salt. protein skimmers and lighting. There are no short cuts. no compromise on what is needed. protein skimmers need to run continually not an hour or so a day. fish dies pollution is instant.

The PH has to be as high as 8-3 and to achieve that you need coral sand. Live rock and therefore we come back to where we began. creating a piece of the reef in your home. long as you stick to the rules easy to keep.

Talk to us about a beginners package and let some one else take the responsibility

  • Why do people say marine fish are hard to keep.
Going back to the goldfish bowl. day or so later the water smells and the cloudiness is getting worse.feed the fish and sooner or later they go to the toilet. no where to flush it. With a good filter its broken down from Ammonia to Nirtite.

  • How can we prevent this happening.
The more you feed them, the more waste they produce. untill the filter cant cope.feed sparingly and make sure you have the creatures to digest any excess waste.

  • What creatures.
Herbit crabs.candy shrimps star fish.bottom feeders like gobiess.

  • feed the fish a wide variety of foods changing daily.
    flake, Frozen brine shrimp.pellets. cockle

  • they are always hungry.
In the wild they have to work for thier food. no one feeds them they fend for them selves. angel fish are brosers swimming over the reef pecking here and there. they use up energy and feed all day. in the aquarium thier swimming ability is severely resticted. they will eat all day but dont use up the energy and produce more waste.

  • The sump
The sump is an eco system of its own. with tiny copeds, crabs and star fish. these eat any surplus food comming from the aquarium and preventing any increase in ammonia.

how are Marine fish caught.

in the philippine indonesia and other countries teams of trainers spend time showing collectors how to use nets. Most of the fishing communities cant afford diving equipment and the use of blast fishing, throwing home made bombs into the water. and collecting any surviving fish. The use of cyanide has been used since the 1960's with devastating effect to the reefs.

we have been involved in these issues for over 30 years. We have been threatened, intimidated had bricks thrown through the window. Why because this is big business. this has nothing to do with any benefit to the fish,to the reef or to your aquarium.its about greed. if every importer and wholesaler in the world said no we don't support it it would stop.

Buy a fish and it dies after a few months you can make more money than selling a fish that lives 20 years.sooner or later people believe they are hard to keep and give up.

What is the UK government doing about this problem. Nothing its down to other people other countries.

Look at the videos on you tube and type in cyanide.

There are people like us who are passionate about the hobby who buy net caught fish and guarantee they support sustainable fishing.

HOLE IN THE WALL

There are various ways to achieve a picture wall aquarium. Picture frame on one side as shown below. Cabinet on the other.

False double wall as shown below that.

Its not practical to build an aquarium the thickness of the wall. the deeper the aquarium the greater the pressure of the water on the sides and base.  as follows

600mm high = 10mm glass

750mm high = 12mm glass

900mm high = 15mm glass

1000m high = 19mm glass

1200mm high = 25mm glass

any thing deeper that 1200mm has to be in acrylic.

The thicker the glass the greater the cost. generally 15mm and above is built on site.

Room divider with picture frame view on one side and enclosed cabinet on the other. The thickness of most walls is 9 inches. The volume of water in a marine system is an essential factor. the larger the volume the easier to keep. Any variation in polution levels is slower and therefore easier to control. Small tanks its instant.

Our basic systems are manufactured in pine. this is resistant to salt. MDF,Chipboard etc absorb the moisture. We also build in Hardwood.Oak etc

Style,Colour and size are to customers specification.

These pictures are seen on other web sites but are manufactured by our company.

Our Service Manager John. installing our system in Wimbledon. this is a double false wall enclosing both sides of the aquarium. Access to filters and aquarium on one side.picture frame  on the other.
