We have been building aquariums for ten years. Initially we used a syphon box and trickle filter.Totally unreliable and ineffective. Our customers want a low maintenance system with limited maintenance costs. If you have several hours per week available to carry out water changes and buy salt and water then this system is not for you.

Marine fish prefer mature water. water changes can not provide the identical temp/salinity and therefore creates an imbalance in the system killing off valuable bacteria. The water disposed off down the drain contains salt and waste from the tank. putting extra pressure on the water purification system.

To keep marines buy a system designed to do the job.

Our cabinets are constructed on 3x2 pine,with 18mm ply top and bottom.12mm back panel. choice of front and side panels.

Not flat packed. delivered assembled and ready to use.

We endeavour to carry out site inspections on every project to establish any difficulties in access and location of the system.

We are able to provide equipment for our systems at considerably less than the RRP by putting together a package to suit the system we are installing.

Live sand/live rock are an essential factor in the maturing process. by using RO water.Quality salt mix the maturing process is substantially reduced to approx for weeks from 12 weeks by reducing the initial pollution levels of the aquarium.

Uncured rock takes up to eight weeks to cure and prolongs the maturing process.

The calurpa has to be a specific species as certain sea weeds are sensitive to PH and salt levels. Use only our Calurpa tested over ten years of production.

The roots must grow in the substrate to be effective in the reduction of Nitrates.

Why are water changes not required.

The system produces natural evaporation of water. this is created by the movement of water in the aquarium.exchange of gasses at the surface,flow of water down to the sump. this evaporation is what takes place in the sea.

salt does not evaporate only pure water and therefore its pure water that needs to be replaced. Using an RO unit and float switch the salt levels in the system remain stable and constant.

In the summer temperatures rise due to fluctuations in the surrounding environment. If the temperature in the room rises so also will the aquarium.it is effected by the surrounding temperature.

Corals and fish can not survive in temperature of 28c and above. A chiller is necessary and evaporation increases.

The succes of keeping marine fish is to maintain a constant environment of salt/ph ammonia and temperature.

The biological cycle is ammonia/nitrite and Nitrate if nitrates levels are high its the end product of high ammonia. cut down on feeding and increase bacteria.

Wide range of styles.colours and sizes. The essential factor in cabinet construction is the ability to take the weight of the aquarium and to spread the load evenly across the floor. The frame is constructed of 3x2 pine with 18mm top and base and 12mm back.

Most aquatic and Garden centres sell ready made aquariums such as juwel/Rena Aqua one.these are not designed for marine fish,they are suitable for cold water and tropical. So what is the difference. We do a conversion to this aquariums to make them suitable for marine aquariums. Nothing hanging from them.no unsightly pipes just a wonderful piece of furniture.

The oceans are so vast and so deep that there is very little variation in salt levels.PH and temperature. Marine fish do not have the ability to adjust to variations in the parameters. This is why people will tell you they are hard to keep. They are hard to keep in a system designed for tropical fish who encounter wide range of variations in lakes and rivers.

The objective of keeping marine fish is to take a piece of the reef and put it in your home. I have kept A yellow tank. Regal tang and a Majestic Angel for over 15 years in the same aquarium. Our succes in building these systems resulted in closing our shop and concentrating on building marine aquariums. Our Manufacturing process in conjunction with European glass allows us to produce high quality systems at an affordable price.

Our cabinets and hoods are made in pine. this is due to the adverse effects of salt water on Melamine,MDF and chip board which do not meet health and safety regulation in areas involving water and condensation. The pine can be stained and sealed in any colour choice. The backs of the aquarium are usually painted in blue emulsion but any colour choice available. We also build the front and side panels and the hood in solid hardwood ie Oak etc to customers specification. The additional cost of the materials added to the quotation.

Don't settle for second best. There is no comparison between tropical and marine. they are entirely different. Most standard aquariums are manufactured for cold water and tropical. Marine fish are far more complex not having the ability to cope with the same levels of pollution. People say they are too hard to keep. that isn't true. most failures are down to a totally inadequate filtration system. and stocking too soon and to quickly. successful marine keeping requires patience. Don't be fooled by inexperienced so called experts who will sell you some thing not designed to do what you expect it to do. External filters are not appropriate for a marine set up.A deep bed sand filter is the ultimate system.producing natural sea water. All equipment used has been tested and approved as the best available value for money. No water changes. Double the stocking levels and expand to suit your own specification. All our systems are individual made to your own requirements.

We do Marine conversion on most make of Aquarium. Fitted with a sump including hole drilling service. �25 per hole. Tank connector �8-50 and double wier to draw water from the surface and the base of the aquarium. �40 per wier.

We only use new glass from the manufacturer. Beware of cheap aquarium built with reclaimed glass from shop fronts.

Construction notes.

Do not use Melamine. Chip board or MDF for any location involving salt water. The salt will attack the material and cause long term problems. Alternatively use non toxic sealant or real wood such as pine.

In confinded spaces some form of ventilation is required to remove evaporation and heat generated by the lights.

I'm a beginner. What should I do?

There is a great deal of conflict in regard to the keeping of Marine Fish. There are many Experts who claim to know it all. The object of keeping Marine fish/Corals and inverts is to put a piece of the reef in your home. These are very delicate creatures who live in a vast ocean where changes in water quality and parameters are minimal. We are still learning every day about these fascinating fish.

There are specific parameters which have to be complied with to have any success in keeping marine fish.

Salinity. This is the level of salt in the water depending on where the fish originate the levels are 1.023 - 1.025. red sea fish live in a higher salt level of 1.035. i do not believe that these species should be acclimatized to a lower salt level.

PH This is the hardness of the water. 7 is neutral below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. sea water needs to be between 8.1 -8.3 the higher level appropriate.

temperature 26-28c The aquarium will warm to room temperature. therefore the cooler the room the easier to control temperature. if this is not stable a chiller will be required. Corals die over 28c.

Marine fish are prone to various diseases including white spot. This is caused by stress. Being moved. Incorrect water quality wrong temp or salt levels. It will spread through out your stock killing every thing.

Begin by reading through the various sections on this web site. Whether or not it follows the guidelines set by so called experts. this is based on 40 years of research. Marine fish are easy to keep and I have kept many species for 15 years plus.

These are basic rules with the intension of creating a natural environment suitable for the long term survival of your fish.

The dangers of syphoning water by sucking it down the tube have long been identified as a means of introducing infection and parasites into the human body. These same principals apply to water tipped down the drain from water changes. From an environmental perspective it should be banned.

Follow the guideline and enjoy your aquarium.

Our systems are designed to use low power consumption. The pumps and lighting use minimum electricity and we therefore do not recommend the use of Metal Halides unless the customer specific requests them. These are for more specialist aquarist who intend to keep hard corals.

In the reef. Hard corals grow near to the surface. require day light lighting at a specific spectrum so that the corals grow and the coral is able to produce high levels of calcium which form its structure. This is a specialist hobby requiring some further knowledge for any level of success.

Soft corals require less lighting as they do not require high calcium levels and are generally located deeper on the reef and need lower levels of light. T5 lighting is generally acceptable.

What is the objective of the sump. Increase in the volume of water. Filtration and all equipment in the cabinet. easy maintenance. No equipment in the aquarium or hanging from it. Does the sump smell. The answer is no it does not. Water flows through the sump at a constant flow.The sea weed (Calurpa) is lit 24/7 so that it grows and absorbs nitrates. the flow of water needs to be adequate to allow the water to produce oxygen. the pump size is calculated to allow for this flow rate.

Will the aquarium flood in a power cut. No the amount of water flowing from the aquarium is calculated and allowed for in the depth of the sump.It is impossible to flood.

There are many people who claim to be experts. After 40 years we are still learning daily about the wonders of the sea and therefore knowledge is gained and opinions change as some thing new is achieved.The challenges must be to learn more about the mysteries of the reef and how the eco system will survive with the rapid changes of global warming. Corals are dying in the oceans they do not have the ability to cope with temperature changes and 28 degrees and above are fatal.

The knowledge gained over the years has assisted in a better understanding of the world we live

HEALTH WARNING

A reef aquarium goes some way towards recreating the reef. There are many micro organisms in the water as well as both good and bad bacteria. Be very wary of siphoning water by sucking it down a tube. All kind of nasty things get drawn into your mouth.

Electricity and water don't go well together. make sure your electrics are safe and wired into a water proof controller. available from us.

Cabinet Construction

The weight of the aquarium with water/rock and decoration can weigh from 1/2 to 2 tons and therefore the base must be solid enough to take the weight and still be an attractive piece of furniture. all our units are built from real pine which is salt resistant and treated during production. 3x2 frame with 18mm top and bottom. No feet so that the weight is distributed evenly over the floor. Front and sides to your choice. doors and handles`various options.

HOLE IN THE WALL

There are various ways to achieve a picture wall aquarium. Picture frame on one side as shown below. Cabinet on the other.

False double wall as shown below that.

Its not practical to build an aquarium the thickness of the wall. the deeper the aquarium the greater the pressure of the water on the sides and base. as follows

600mm high = 10mm glass

750mm high = 12mm glass

900mm high = 15mm glass

1000m high = 19mm glass

1200mm high = 25mm glass

any thing deeper that 1200mm has to be in acrylic.

The thicker the glass the greater the cost. generally 15mm and above is built on site.

Room divider with picture frame view on one side and enclosed cabinet on the other. The thickness of most walls is 9 inches. The volume of water in a marine system is an essential factor. the larger the volume the easier to keep. Any variation in polution levels is slower and therefore easier to control. Small tanks its instant.

Our basic systems are manufactured in pine. this is resistant to salt. MDF,Chipboard etc absorb the moisture. We also build in Hardwood.Oak etc
